Turkiye, thanks to the improvements and reforms implemented in the health sector over the past decade, is steadily increasing its share in world health tourism.
Turkiye, which is located in the middle of the territory covering the Middle East, Europe, the Balkans and Africa, is becoming a leading country in health tourism due to its well-trained medical and medical personnel, transport accessibility, visa-free regime with 62 countries and high technologies in the field of health. In particular, Turkiye is attractive to countries with which we are linked by historical and cultural relations.
All the necessary preparatory measures have been taken to ensure that citizens of other countries in the region can use the same quality medical care that public and private hospitals and clinics provide to their citizens. Arrived in Turkiye for treatment, foreign guests get treatment without problems, and also have the opportunity to spend a good vacation. Turkiye, which is the leading in Europe by the number of therapeutic thermal waters, also becomes a leader in the provision of thermal spa services. Turkey gives people even greater healing, thanks to its culture of hospitality. Along with traditional care for patients, care is also important for elderly people with physical or mental health problems. In the matter of caring for sick and elderly people, it is necessary to note the influence of culture. In Turkey, a very hospitable society with a long culture of serving people. This circumstance facilitates the issues of tourism related to care for the elderly and disabled in our country.
Many patients from Europe, Russia, the USA, the Middle East and neighboring countries come to Turkiye. Turkiye in the near future will take the leading position among the countries of the region in regard to medical and health tourism, thanks to high-quality and reliable medical services, as well as the possibility of providing medical services at an affordable price. Private and public hospitals provide quality medical care at a level capable of competing with the West, and most hospitals are equipped with the most advanced technologies. Medical institutions in Turkey, especially in cities such as Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya, accept a large number of foreign patients and treat them.
To date, 47 Turkish medical institutions have international accreditation of JCI.
About 150,000 foreign patients are treated annually in Turkiye. After carrying out health reform programs in the country, qualitative, rapid and accessible medical services, going beyond the borders of the country, are provided to all citizens of the world. Once upon a time thousands of people from Turkey went to Western countries for treatment. And today the number of Turkish citizens going to Western countries for treatment is negligible. In the Western countries, long queues for receiving treatment, medical services are too expensive and the range of problems covered by insurance has begun to narrow. In many countries in Africa and neighboring eastern countries, quality medical care, trained personnel and advanced technologies are lacking. For this reason, a lot of patients from the nearest countries come for treatment in our country.
The private medical sector plays the role of a locomotive in health tourism. 95% of health tourism services are provided by the private medical sector. However, public hospitals also accept foreign patients for treatment. In particular, in the framework of the Health Tourism program, in the regions where there is no possibility of obtaining fast medical care in the private sector, the role of public hospitals is very important.
