In 2007, the Ministry of Health of Turkey prepared and launched the "Plan for the Development Strategy of Turkish Tourism" and the "General Plan for Thermal Tourism" to improve the activities and policies for the development of thermal sanatorium tourism in Turkey.
Thermal tourism includes various procedures, in particular thermomineral baths, drinking thermal water, inhalation, mud baths, etc., combined with climate treatment, physical therapy, rehabilitation, exercise, psychotherapy and diet, as well as recreational activities.
Thermal treatment is a method of treatment using therapeutic agents that are used serially on a regular basis in certain doses, repeated at specific intervals.
Treatment in hot springs is a therapeutic treatment system that uses mineral waters of underground and marine origin, gases, mud and climatic factors, as well as methods of natural treatment of local climatic elements and other necessary procedures
Balneotherapy is bathing, consumption and inhalation of such natural healing elements as thermomineral water, therapeutic mud and gases.
Climatotherapy is a systematic method of multi-dose treatment with the help of climate elements such as air temperature, humidity, wind power and speed and solar radiation.
Thalassotherapy is the medical use of sea water. It is based on the systematic use of sea water, marine products and marine climate.
Exercises, electrotherapy, massage and other are methods used together with hot springs.
Local or systemic use of medicines during the use of hot springs.
Thermal waters are waters whose temperature is above 20ºC in the source of origin.
Mineral water is water that contains at least 1 gram of dissolved mineral per liter, reaches the surface naturally or by drilling / gallery method and can be used for physiological and medical purposes and not contaminated bacteriologically or chemically.
Thermomineral waters are waters whose temperature is above 20ºC in the source of origin and which contain at least 1 gram of dissolved mineral per liter.
Balneological waters contain some minerals in a ratio exceeding the threshold value. They are classified as follows:
Turkey occupies the seventh place in the world in terms of geothermal resources. It ranks first in Europe for geothermal resources and the third for their use in the spa business. For more effective and productive use of geothermal sources in Turkey, approaches are being developed for renewable water use, which differ from the traditional use of thermal springs. With regard to increasing the income and the number of tourists in thermal tourism, Turkey's goal is also to increase the number of thermal tourism facilities, the integration of treatment courses, health centers and hotel business in accordance with international standards.
